ROYAPETTAH
This part of town is
known as an enclave for Muslims in the city [though not only]. One of my
favorite cafés – Amethyst – is in near where I am recording. The Thousand Points Mosque is nearby, as are a couple
of movie theatres, a hindu temple, and a big mall. You can follow Pycrofts road out
to the sea along Khamarajar Salai. Near that main street there are some
booksellers and small shops.
First, the sound of flutes and drums
Fast enough moving, medium traffic
Mostly to the right [my left]
To the left – my right – that lane is reserved only for
buses. Some of the non-bus drivers use the lane.
There is a temple near me [to my right]
Almost no one honks at
me.
Even in this traffic there are momentary lulls
The sounds of traffic flowing by start to feel like waves monotonously
washing against the beach.
ca. 5:05 – “What sir?”
[A rick driver]
Nothing...
[Later on, listening again to the recording, a smile comes
over my face. It strikes me as funny. And I feel affection for the rick
driver. There's a first time for everything...]
Around 5:30, another man – curious about my presence, but
mostly wanting to cross the road – came and stood by me [after the rick
driver], but said nothing. Can you hear his presence [to my left in the
recording] by the way he absorbs sound?
N.B.: This isn't a picture of Whites Road, just a picture of Chennai traffic. I'll be taking my camera with me next time to get pictures as well as sounds. Also, in the future, I'll hopefully be interviewing people on site.
